MEET THE TEAM

Eddy Fan is a Professor in the Interdepartmental Division of Critical Care Medicine and the Institute of Health Policy, Management and Evaluation at the University of Toronto and a Staff Intensivist at the University Health Network/Sinai Health System. Dr. Fan received his undergraduate degree from the University of Toronto, his medical degree from the University of Western Ontario and a PhD in Clinical Investigation from Johns Hopkins University. He is currently the Medical Director of the Extracorporeal Life Support Program at the Toronto General Hospital. Dr. Fan’s research has focused on advanced life support for acute respiratory failure and patient outcomes from critical illness. He is the lead investigator of the iCORE and INDEX projects.

Dr. Martin Urner is an attending physician in the Medical/Surgical ICU at Toronto General Hospital, with specialty training in Anesthesiology and Intensive Care Medicine from Zurich University Hospital. He earned his Ph.D. in Clinical Epidemiology and Health Care Research at the University of Toronto, focusing on the impact of mechanical ventilation intensity on outcomes in acute respiratory failure. Dr. Urner’s research centers on causal inference, longitudinal data analysis, and prediction modelling using large observational datasets in physiology, anesthesiology, and critical care. He is the lead investigator of the INCEPTION project.

Felicity Backhouse joined iCORE as the project manager in 2020. She received an undergraduate degree in the research specialist stream of psychology at Wilfrid Laurier University, an MSc in Medical Science at the University of Toronto, and is a Certified Clinical Research Professional. Felicity utilizes her diverse background in clinical research to improve data integrity and streamline data collection efforts across our ICUs.

Kathleen Exconde is a dedicated Research Project Manager whose expertise lies in coordinating and managing local and international large-scale clinical registries. She is passionate about driving innovation within research projects, as well as using project management principles to improve the research on, and outcomes of, critically ill patients in the ICU.

Mavis Salmena Lyons is a Clinical Research Coordinator in the Critical Care Department at Toronto General Hospital, part of the University Health Network (UHN).With a strong academic foundation combining a Bachelor's degree from McMaster University and a Master of Public Health from Queen's University, she brings a comprehensive understanding of healthcare research and public health principles to her role. Mavis specializes in working with large-scale observational datasets to investigate patient outcomes in critical care settings, focusing on acute respiratory failure and critical illness. Her work contributes to advancing evidence-based practices in intensive care medicine and helps inform treatment protocols for critically ill patients.

Xueying Han completed her Master of Science in Biostatistics at the University of Toronto. She is interested in using statistical models to explore healthcare-related questions and support decision-making in clinical research. Her work mainly focuses on survival analysis, longitudinal data, and joint modeling, and she enjoys finding ways to turn complex data into insights that can help improve patient outcomes.
